Whilst you`re in the coffee zone why not take the opportunity to work for one or more days on a Colombian Coffee Farm ?Plantation House is now able to offer guests the following packages :-
PACKAGE 1
For a daily price of 15,000 COP per day per person you can work one or more days on a coffee farm. The work involved will depend on the time of the year, you may ending up picking or planting coffee or you may end up digging holes, painting or working on trails. You need to be reasonably fit, have plenty of enthusiasm and ideally at least a small amount of spanish. Don`t worry one of our experienced hands will show you the ropes and make certain you don`t get into too much mischief. The working day is typically 7.30am - 11.55am and 13.30pm-16.30pm although obviously if you wish to leave earlier you may.
Price includes lunch, drinks all necessary equipment (machette, wellington boots, gloves, wet weather gear) but not accomodation.
PACKAGE 2
For a weekly (or longer period of time) with accomodation on our coffee farm. Please note that accomodation on the coffee farm is basic (for example there are no hot water showers) although you are welcome to make use of the hot showers and facilities in Plantation House.
If you choose to live on the farm then the idea is you work only mornings (7.30am - 11.55am). We provide lunch (if you want you can organise the other meals with Estella the wife/mother of the family who live on the farm or if you prefer you can cook for yourself). You pay 10,000 COP per day for accomodation, regardless of whether you work or not. For the days you don`t work, you simply don`t get lunch. Once again machette, wellington boots, gloves, supervision etc is all included in this price.
PACKAGE 3
For a weekly (or longer period of time) with accomodation in Plantation House. This is basically the same as PACKAGE 2 but here you can stay in Plantation House and commute to the farm.
If your timing is right, we may have a space in Plantation House which we call the attic. If the attic is available and you want to stay there then you pay 12,000 per night. If you prefer to stay in one of the dormitories or private rooms then you pay the normal rate. For the days you work we provide lunch, for the days you don`t work then you don`t get lunch provided. Once again machette, wellington boots, gloves, supervision etc is all included in this price.
WORKING AND STUDYING SPANISH
Should you want it we have a spanish teacher in Salento that will do classes for a discounted rate for volunteers on the farm. The idea is that you work in the mornings and then study in the afternoon. You pay the professor direct we have simply negotiated a discounted rate for our farm volunteers.
All of these packages are non-negotiable. We cannot do a straight exchange of work for food and lodging because it contravenes the labour and visa laws of Colombia and because we feel it is morally wrong to use tourists to work when we could employ a local person. The shorter the time you work on the farm the more supervision you`ll need, so volunteering for a day or two means (with no disrespect) that your assistance actually takes away from the efficiency of the place.
The farm Don Eduardos is 10 minutes walk from Plantation House and please note the trail is steep and frequently muddy.
