Running through the valley, beside which Salento lies, is the Quindío river, which rushes down from the hills, and charges through the valley in a mad torrent.
Following the river upstream will lead you to the Valle del Cocora, the home of Colombia’s national tree, the wax palm, or Palma de Cera, which can grow to 60 meters in height.
If you like walking, it's a 10 kilometer stroll along a recently paved road, but for those not wishing to scale the hills there are also local taxi jeeps available for a modest price.
In addition to the breathtaking scenery, there are a few pleasant restaurants in Cocora, and the opportunity to hire horses, and go riding in the cloud forest of Los Nevados National Park.
