Armenia’s Jeep parade
The jeep or "willie" is one of the typical sights of the coffee zone. Willies have been and still are responsible for moving belongings, people and produce throughout the zona cafetera. The traditional picture of a "willie"
is that it is laden down so heavily the front wheels are off the ground.
To commemorate this long relationship the highlight of the Armenia fiesta in October is the "Parade of Willies". There are several categories in the
competitive section including who can hold the most households goods and who can hold the most agricultural produce. There is also a section showing people the many and varied uses the "willies" have been put to.
To this day "willies" are still an integral part of the community whether it be providing a bus service, moving house or getting yourself to work or the kids to school. Most of the "willies" are considerably older than their owners and it is not uncommon to see "willies" from the 1950`s and 1940`s parked up around the plaza in Salento.
