
In the first week of January Salento celebrates it`s birthday with an enormous fiesta. An enormous bandstand is constructed in the plaza for late night concerts. The plaza is closed off for traffic and the buses to and from Salento run 24 hours a day. A number of events including novelty bullfights take place.
Easter as is the case in most of Colombia is a major event in Salento.The main square is closed to traffic and various religous processions take place around Salento. The focus being the stairs up to the cross and of course the stations of the cross.
In the second week of June Salento has a 3 day music festival .As with almost all of the special events in Salento the plaza is closed off to traffic and a bandstand in the main square is constructed.
During the second week in October Armenia has it`s fiesta. The culmination of the fiesta is YIPAO which is a procession of old jeeps piled high with household goods, flowers and other agricultural produce. This takes place on the last Sunday of the fiesta and is usually followed by a free concert (and enormous party) in one of the stadiums.
The 7th and 8th December is the "alumbrado" a religous festival celebrated by candlelit lanterns in most (if not all of the streets). The festival is Colombia wide but one of the most famous places to see this is in the nearby town of Quimbaya.
