The Zona Cafetera is home to some 530 different species of birds including some 30 varieties of humming birds.

There are a number of recommended bird watching routes around the area. Plantation House has full information on these routes as well as a copy of the authoritive "Birds of Colombia" book for identifying those birds you`ve seen over a beer in the evening.

Whether you are walking in the valley of Cocora, exploring Salento or simply relaxing in a hammock in the garden in Plantation House keep your eyes peeled you never know what you might see. In Plantation House garden humming birds, motmots, owls, eagles, toucans, jays and woodpeckers are regularly seen.

In the nature reserve ACAIME, in the valley of Cocora it is possible to see between 6 and 8 varieties of humming birds. In some cases the hummingbirds are so tame they will even land on you !!

In addition to the bird life there is a rich variety of other wildlife to be observed although frequently it is a little harder to spot. Plantation House guests have seen and photographed cloud forest sloths and cazumbos (a cross between a racoon and an anteater).
